Future Strategies in Engineering Quality with James Vignoles (Part 1)

Within part 1 of this discussion around ‘QA and digital transformation’ in partnership with a1qa, James Vignoles (Director of QA – Labs at Sophos Ltd), discusses how organisations can embed QA throughout a digital transformation project.

There are common areas where QA adds value. The QA professional needs to be setting the requirements for the quality process, the deliverables, and the dates. According to James, organisations need to have a repeatable process. They need to ensure that the repeatable process and operation are quality. Automation can take a lot of time, therefore organisations need to ensure they are spending the right amount of time on it.

To decoy embed QA throughout a digital transformation project, automation needs to be deliverable, especially if working with multiple numbers of teams. The teams must support the lifecycle, automation tests need to be deliverable. An additional area that is important when in terms of embedding QA through digital transformation is having critical friends that are able to ask the questions of what and why then review the results.

The conversation then moves on to whether agile needs QA or whether QA needs agile to be successful. According to James, QA is just a role being undertaken by the team. You do not need a QA professional, however, if you do not have a QA professional, then you need to provide QA training. Therefore, agile needs QA.

Having a QA professional trained up to work alongside every threat researcher whose working in a team of one is not feasible. Organisations need to ensure they provide them with the correct resources and training to help achieve that.

As mentioned by James, for organisations to be successful, QA needs to be early, it has to be continuous and it has to be involved in the decisions driven by risk and data. It has to have clear success criteria, all of the following are required which is provided by agile.
