Event Takeaways: Avoiding Change Fatigue

Firstly a big thank you to everyone who attended our BTN event on Tuesday 11th March at the Soho Hotel.  It was a great evening that provoked lots of interesting discussion.  Facilitating the event was undertaken at extremely short notice by Toby Lovern who really did a fantastic job, so a particular thank you to him.  Toby has also provided us with some great takeaways from the event which you can read below.

What is Change Fatigue?
· Loss of “staying” power
· Getting lost on the journey
· Reversing Op Model changes that have already been made before
· Too much change
· Waiting for an expected change to start
· Not being able to have a rest when the organisation needs one
· A sign of resistance to change

How to measure Change Fatigue

· Resilience surveys
· Attrition (staff)
· Changes in sickness absence
· Efficiency measures going in the wrong direction
· Changes not embedded / going back to old ways of working
· Reliable people “shrugging their shoulders” / when good people switch off
· Disengaged workforce
· Drop in motivation (core team and workforce)
· Volume of negative noise

How to mitigate Change Fatigue
· Gamification
· Multiple comms channels but a consistent message
· Job plus coaching / using coaches to prepare people impacted by the change
· Refresh the project / programme team
· Breaking down the change / journey into smaller elements
· Focus on engagement and dependency management
· Use an Subj. Matter Expertise “A-Team” to lead the change
· Have the arguments up front not during the change
· Use rich pictures to get a consistent understanding of the end state that all levels can engage with / understand
· Encourage networking between functions / regions being transformed
